Built in 2001 as an artist studio, the Lamy Rail House sits on 1.03 acres in historic Lamy, 18 miles from downtown Santa Fe. Its Traditional Community zoning is what sets it apart: the property may be used residentially or for light commercial purposes, with several uses permitted by right. General stores, art studios, museums, and libraries are all permitted uses, and additional light commercial uses may be available with conditional approval. The building suits that flexibility. Vaulted ceilings, textured concrete floors, 1.5 bathrooms, a wood-burning stove, and two open-framed porches give the interior an open, studio-like character that adapts easily to retail, gallery, workshop, or gathering space. A secluded loft adds flexible square footage for guests, offices, or creative live/work. The house has a creative lineage, having been home to a blacksmith and a painter among other artists. Location reinforces the case. Views from nearly every room reach toward the historic Mission Chapel of Our Lady of Light, and the property looks out toward Lamy's Depot and the Legal Tender Saloon. The setting is distinctly Lamy: historic railroad architecture, open skies, wetlands, mature trees, and a village that feels far from Santa Fe while remaining an easy drive from the Plaza. The active rail line runs through the heart of it. Amtrak passes twice daily with service toward Los Angeles and Chicago, and Sky Railway brings visitors and foot traffic into the village — a genuine asset for a business built around a destination. For some, passing trains are simply part of Lamy's rhythm; for others, they are part of what makes the place memorable. A rare combination: the peace and character of a small historic village, a rail connection reaching well beyond Northern New Mexico, and zoning flexible enough to let you create, retreat, entertain, work, or build something here.
